Paperback Book Printing in the UK

Paperback booklets combine durability with a polished, professional appearance. Their strong covers and neatly finished square spines make them suitable for educational, corporate and creative publications, including handbooks, study guides, visitor information and playbooks.

How Paperback Booklets Are Produced

The booklet is manufactured in two separate stages. First, the internal pages are printed and collated in the correct order. The cover is then printed independently using your selected paper stock.

Once prepared, the pages are firmly glued into the cover spine, creating a durable book designed to withstand frequent handling and long-term use.

Customisation Options

Tailor your paperback booklet to suit your project:

  • Select from flexible sizes up to A4.
  • Choose from several internal-page and cover materials.
  • Add one of three premium lamination finishes for extra protection and visual appeal.
  • Order from a single booklet upwards.
  • Quantities of up to 500 are printed using advanced digital presses.
  • Larger orders are produced using high-quality lithographic printing.
  • Lamination is recommended for heavily inked covers to protect against scuffing and ink transfer during transportation or storage.
  • Choose Soft Touch, Matt or Gloss lamination for a durable, professional finish.

Paperback Book Technical Specifications

Preparing Your Paperback Book Artwork

Submit the cover and internal pages as two separate files.

Files to Supply

  1. Cover artwork: Provide the complete cover as a spread that includes the spine. Use our spine-width calculator to determine the correct spine measurement.
  2. Internal artwork: Submit the inner content as individual pages arranged in consecutive reading order.

For example, artwork for a 40-page brochure should contain:

  • One 36-page PDF containing the internal pages
  • One two-page cover PDF, with the outside cover spread on page 1 and the inside cover spread on page 2

Artwork Requirements

  • Page count: The total number of booklet pages must be divisible by two.
  • Safe zone: Keep all text, page numbers and images at least 10 mm away from every edge.
  • Non-printable area: Leave the spine section of the inside cover blank for effective glue adhesion. This area must include the complete spine and extend 6 mm beyond each side of the fold.
  • Bleed: Add 3 mm of bleed to all sides.
  • Colour mode: Supply the artwork as a CMYK PDF.
  • Fonts: Outline or embed all fonts.
  • Resolution: Prepare all artwork at 300 dpi.

Cover Lamination Recommendation

Laminating the cover pages is recommended for additional protection. During binding, the spine is glued to the internal pages while the book is held with a clamp. This process may cause scuffs or printing marks around the spine and across other heavily inked cover areas.

If you prefer not to add lamination, reduce the amount of artwork and background colour extending into the inner and outer spine sections.
