What Is Case Binding?
Case binding is the specialist production method used to create hardback books. The front and back cover artwork is printed and wrapped around greyboard, forming the rigid outer case.
The internal pages are bound together using strong PUR (Polyurethane Reactive) adhesive, following a process similar to perfect-bound booklets.
Blank white endpapers and flysheets are then added. The unprinted endpapers are glued to the inside front and back covers, while the blank flysheets are positioned immediately before and after the printed pages.

Artwork Submission
Supply the casebound book artwork as two separate files.
1. Outside Cover File
Provide the complete outer cover as one spread that includes:
- Front cover
- Back cover
- Spine
- Hinges
- Wraparound area
Download the available templates, as they contain the required bleed, safe-zone and wraparound measurements. Use the spine-width calculator to determine the correct spine size for your book.
2. Internal Pages File
Supply the printed inner pages individually and arrange them in consecutive reading order.
For example, a book ordered with 40 internal pages requires:
- One 40-page PDF containing the inner pages in sequence
- One cover PDF supplied as a complete spread, including the spine and wraparound area
File Requirements
- The internal page count must be divisible by four.
- Add 3 mm of bleed on every side.
- Maintain a 10 mm safe zone around all edges.
- Supply both files as CMYK PDFs using the PDF/X-1a standard.
- Outline or embed all fonts.
- Prepare the artwork at 300 dpi.
Blank white endpapers and flysheets will be inserted automatically after your artwork is received.
