Softback Booklets

Also referred to as softback booklets, soft-cover booklets combine a neat square spine with a smooth, professional cover. Their refined appearance makes them a popular choice for both commercial and creative projects, including catalogues, brochures, magazines and other publications that require a high-quality presentation.

How Softback Booklets Are Made

Production takes place in two carefully managed stages. First, the internal pages are printed and arranged in the correct order, while the cover is printed separately on your selected material. The assembled pages are then securely glued into the cover’s spine, producing a strong booklet designed to withstand regular handling.

Customisation Options

Create a booklet that suits your specific requirements with a wide selection of available options:

  • Choose from flexible dimensions up to A4.
  • Select from several materials for both the internal pages and cover.
  • Add one of three premium lamination finishes for improved appearance and durability.
  • Order as little as one booklet.
  • Quantities of up to 500 are produced using advanced digital printing presses.
  • Larger quantities are manufactured through high-quality lithographic printing.
  • Lamination is recommended for covers with heavy ink coverage, as it helps prevent scuffing and ink transfer during storage or transportation.
  • Choose Soft Touch, Matt or Gloss lamination for a durable and professional finish.

Suitable Applications

Soft-cover booklets are used across many industries and for a wide variety of purposes:

  • Businesses: Training manuals, brochures and product catalogues
  • Publishers: Newsletters, magazines and periodicals
  • Educational organisations: Yearbooks, course guides and programme materials
  • Non-profit organisations: Informational publications and campaign booklets
  • Individuals: Event booklets and photographic portfolios
  • Retailers: Promotional catalogues and product listings
  • Estate agents: Property brochures and showcase books
  • Event planners: Schedules, programmes and visitor guides

Whatever you are producing, soft-cover booklets provide a dependable, premium option that can be tailored to suit your project. If you are unsure which spine width to select, use our spine-width calculator to identify the most suitable fit.

Preparing Artwork for Softback Booklets

Artwork Submission

Please provide two separate files:

  1. Cover artwork: Supply the cover as a spread that includes the spine. Use our spine-width calculator to determine the correct spine measurement.
  2. Internal artwork: Supply all inner content as individual pages arranged in consecutive reading order.

For example, a 40-page brochure should be submitted as:

  • A 36-page PDF containing the internal pages
  • A two-page cover PDF, with page 1 showing the outside cover spread and page 2 showing the inside cover spread

File Preparation Requirements

  • Page count: The total number of booklet pages must be divisible by two.
  • Safe zone: Keep text, page numbers and images at least 10 mm away from every edge.
  • Non-printable area: Leave the spine section of the inside cover blank to ensure the glue bonds correctly. This area must include the spine and extend 6 mm beyond each side of the fold.
  • Bleed: Add 3 mm of bleed to all sides.
  • Colour mode: Submit the artwork as a CMYK PDF.
  • Fonts: All fonts must be outlined or embedded.
  • Resolution: Prepare all artwork at 300 dpi.

Cover Lamination

We recommend laminating the cover for added protection. During production, a clamp holds the booklet while the spine is glued to the internal pages. This process can cause scuffs or printer marks around the spine and other areas of the cover containing heavy ink coverage.

If you prefer not to use lamination, reduce the amount of artwork or background colour extending across the outer and inner spine sections.
